Archdiocese of Newark: Sites and Building Commission (1928 - 1957)
Collection IDADN 0013
Size0.5 linear feet (1 box)
Collection Description
The collection consists of records of the Archdiocesan Sites and Building Commission. The Commission was presided over by the Vicar-General. It considered, and made recommendations on, requests by parishes and institutions regarding purchases of property, new building, additions to existing property, and repairs and renovations. A single individual was usually assigned to investigate each request, and a report was then made to the Commission. These reports, summarized in the minutes, contain data on the nature and size of the parish; minute descriptions of the state of existing buildings and of buildings to be purchased; financial data; information on relations with civic authorities, architects, and builders; etc. Sketch maps are sometimes included. When more complex matters, such as a plan to increase the number of parishes in a given county, are under consideration, an auxiliary committee is appointed. Requests from Newark churches are included, but are relatively few.
