School News Scrapbooks on Microfilm (1908 - 1946)
RepositoryNewark Public Library, Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center
Size14 reels of microfilm
Collection Description
The Library holds two sets of microfilmed "School News" scrapbooks. The microfilm reproduces much, but not all, of the material held in hard copy, in the collections School News from Newark Newspapers: Scrapbooks [Part 1, 39 volumes] and School News from Newark Newspapers: Scrapbooks [Part 2, 26 volumes]. Scrapbooks covering the years 1903-1907 and 1947-1957 are held in hard copy, but not on microfilm. Scrapbooks covering 1908-1930 are microfilmed but have not been found in hard copy. The two sets of microfilm duplicate each other in part, but the contents of individual reels are not congruent.

The contents of the scrapbooks are clippings from local newspapers reporting issues, events, activities, and announcements relating to Newark schools and to the Board of Education. The material in most volumes is grouped by topic and then arranged in rough chronological order. The topics consist of both standard categories and subjects that are special or unique to the period, including budgets, construction of new schools, personnel issues, profiles of student bodies by ethnicity, industrial education, naturalization classes; and academic, athletic, arts, and industrial training programs, etc.
