Collection Description
This collection consists of pamphlets, catalogues, business cards, ink blotters, and other printed material related to the promotion and history of various Newark businesses.

Box 1: contains a general folder labeled "Business Cards" that includes brochures, calendars, ink blotters, and cards. Businesses represented include Kugler and Rice, photo supply house; Sprague and Doughty, wholesale dealers in oysters and clams; Stoutenburgh and Co., clothiers; T. B. Cryer, heating engineers and contractors; and the Ward Baking Co.; among others (1880s-ca. 1940s).

Churchman Funeral Services: photocopy of a 75th anniversary pamphlet, with biographical information on the Churchman family and a history of the [African American] business (1973)

Jacob J. Hockenjos and Co. (suppliers of paints, oils, and varnishes): scrapbook containing: clippings (many in German; ca. 1870s-1880s), a few receipts, a catalogue of paints, oil, varnishes and supplies (ca. 1920s), an issue of "Perfect Homes Magazine," (published for Hockenjos; Jun 1951), and a letter to the American Paint Journal with a history of J .J. Hockenjos Co. (1951)

National Newark and Essex Banking Co.: an anniversary publication with an illustrated history of the company (1954); promotional materials; and a letter regarding the death of a cashier, Mr. Carter (Dec 4, 1893)

Whitehead and Hoag Co. (designers and manufacturers of advertising, industrial, and fraternal products in plastic, metal, and leather): product sheets, promotional materials, and a history of the company in 3 parts, from the Journal of the Orders and Medals Society of America, Vol. 47, nos. 2-4 (1996)

Other material in Box 1 includes: "The Home of the Prudential," a brochure with a brief description and many photographs of the Prudential Insurance Co.'s home office (1917); "The New Jersey Bell," Vol. 2, No. 7, with a description and photographs of New Jersey Bell Telephone Co.'s new headquarters (1929); S. D. Lauter Co.'s "Musical Home Journal" (Apr 1893); Cogswell Realty Group brochures (2004, 2005); and West Side Trust Co. steel pens

Box 2: contains a general folder of catalogues, promotional material, and price lists for Howard A. Smith and Co., bicycle supplies (1892-1893); Amos H. Van Horn, carpets and furniture, "Stories for Little Ones"; "A Little Book about a Big Firm" [Stoutenburgh]; N. H. White, watches (1878); Theo. F. Johnson and Co., dried fruits and nuts (1874, 1903); William R. Ward, shade and fruit trees (1877); Byrd Brothers, shade trees (1876); Oliver Marsh, Newark clock-maker, "The Marsh Clock" by Orville Hagans (Hobbies Magazine,1968)

P. Ballantine and Sons Brewery: correspondence, inter-office notes, and publications (ca. 1941-1942)

Scrapbook of promotional and business cards, and advertisements, most illustrated and printed in color, and including some cards from Newark businesses, such as Albert and Bayley Fine Shoes, Hayne and Co., etc. (ca. 1880s-1900)

Newark Board of Trade: annual banquet programs (1900-1907)

Renaissance Newark: press release, history, maps of development parcels, brochures, and material entitled "Translating Transit into Growth" (1980-1991)

Folder labeled "Exhibit Catalogues and Directories": includes an exhibit catalogue of "The Newark Jewelry Industry," held at the New Jersey Historical Society (1979); a program, in German, for Bartenbaues der Industrie und Kundt held at A. Haeberle's Bay View Park and Halle on Springfield Ave., with many advertisements for German businesses in Newark (1895); New Centre Market, Official Souvenir Book of the Opening, with many advertisements and recipes (1924); and Blue Book of the Greater Newark Committee, created to "promote the growth of Newark and the development of its industrial and commercial enterprises," including a membership list (1912)
