Access NoteThe Newark Public Schools Archive, founded by former Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Marion A. Bolden and the late Pat Restaino, a retired Barringer High School principal, is still (2017) taking shape, but it already holds a substantial collection of Board of Education and individual school records, photographs, ephemera, and artifacts. The Archive has rescued early official records and memorabilia that were in danger of being discarded; it has also received donations of material from collectors, former staff, and alumni of Newark schools. In addition to schools material the Archive holds some items relating to Newark history in general.
Access to the archive is by prior appointment only; it will always be open on the second and third Tuesdays of the month, but other times can be arranged. Facilities for photocopying are available, and use of digital cameras is permitted. Researchers should enter the school building at the Milford Ave. entrance. The Archive is overseen by and receives important support from the Newark Public Schools Historical Preservation Committee (NPSHPC). Questions about the Archive and the work of the Committee can be submitted by email, or by mail to: NPSHPC,P.O. Box 9848, Newark, NJ 07104.
