Collection Description
The Newark Industrial Institute, founded in 1873 to encourage industrial and technological progress in the city, sponsored an annual Newark Industrial Exhibition, which was held at the Rink on Washington Street and in other nearby buildings. The meetings of the Institute were held at a variety of venues including 758 Broad Street, Upper Library Hall, 121 Mechanic Street, and in the Exhibition buildings.

Included in this collection are minutes, visitors' registers, and financial records pertaining to the Newark Industrial Institute and its Exhibitions.

The bulk of the material in Box 1 is related to Newark Industrial Exhibitions: an 1875 volume of exhibitors' receipts (Folder 1); clippings, 1873-1875, which include, among other information, details of the musical programs presented each night (Folders 2 and 3); flyers, announcements, and engravings relating to the exhibitions and to musical performances by the Hutchison Family, the Seventh Regiment Band, Twenty-Second Regiment Band, Ninth Regiment Band of New York, the Old Folks' Musical Union, J. A. Butterfield ("Belshazzar"), Reinhard's Band, and the Scotch Thistle Band (Folders 6 and 7); and a scrapbook of clippings, flyers, and receipts. Also in Box 1 is a statement by the Newark Board of Trade on the preservation of archives and expressing support for the New Jersey Historical Society and an account book of the Newark Industrial Institute, ca. 1872-1874 (Folder 4)
More clippings and accounts relating to the exhibitions, along with a visitor's book and a roll book of directors of the Institute can be found in Box 2.

Boxes 3 through 6 consist of financial records-- a receipt book, a financial ledger and a volume of shares in the Institute. Also in Box 6 are the minutes of the Executive Committee of the Institute, which include extensive discussion on the purchase and renovation of exhibition buildings.
