Collection Description The Newark Tercentenary Committee was formed to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the City by highlighting its significance, industrial and commercial achievements, and cultural assets. Comprised of numerous civic leaders, the Committee planned a series of parades, exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances, guided tours, and other events meant to familiarize residents with the City's past and encourage a sense of "pride in Newark."

The Committee was headquartered at Continental House at 2 Park Place, where its members met and the Chairman coordinated a range of activities. The most visible of the many programs held throughout the year was the May 18th Founder's Day Parade, which was estimated to have attracted more than 250,000 spectators.

Collection Contents The records consist of notes and files compiled by Museum Director (and Committee member) Katherine Coffey and memorabilia donated to the Museum by the Committee. Contents of the collection include legal documents, planning notes, correspondence, publications, memorabilia, ephemera, and photographs documenting the work of the Committee and reflecting public participation in Tercentenary events. The publications include official newsletters, booklets, and programs of events, as well as booklets produced by schools, corporations, the Newark City Hospital, and other participants in the anniversary celebrations; there are extensive files of clippings and a copy of the Newark News magazine's commemorative edition, May 1966. Several files document exhibits of art work and historical items, songs and poems composed for the occasion, and activities of the Descendants Committee. Artifacts in the collection include badges and buttons, hats, flags, bumper stickers, a keychain, and other souvenirs. The photographs series includes many images of the Founders Day Parade.
