Collection Description
The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company, founded in Newark and chartered in 1845, was the first life insurance firm in the state of New Jersey. There were twelve founding directors, of whom five were from Newark: Charles McNett, Lewis C. Grover, Marcus L. Ward, Samuel Meeker, and William M. Simpson. Ward served on the Bylaws, Executive, and Account Committees. The collection consists of a copy of the original by-laws and an organizational directory.
