Collection Description
The volume is an accounts ledger (inscribed "Ledger A"), recording transactions of customers of A. P. Reynolds of Newark, for the period Mar 1821 to ca. Oct 1822. In most cases the items sold by Reynolds are entered only as "merchandise," but there are brief mentions of butter, brandy, and flax seed. The accounts are kept by individual customer; although the individual accounts are not entered in alphabetical order, the volume begins with a handwritten index. Reynolds' customers included many of Newark's best-known families: Alling, Beach, Baldwin, Breuen, Budd, Boudinot, Doremus, Dodds, Dayton, Congar, Condit, Canfield, Camp, Freeman, Hornblower, Goble, Kinney, Kearny, Lyon, Meeker, Munn, Ogden, Pennington, Pierson, Sayres, Townley, Tichenor, Ward, Winans, and Whitehead, among others.
