Collection Description
In late 1960 Archbishop Thomas A. Boland launched a $25,000,000 Expansion Campaign for the Archdiocese of Newark. The money, to be raised by clergy and volunteers in individual parishes throughout the archdiocese was to be used for the construction of Catholic high schools, a new building at Immaculate Conception Seminary, and homes for the aged in each of the four counties of the archdiocese. The collection contains both general records of the campaign and reports of coordinators of the campaign in each country. A small file of correspondence from lay people (1961) indicates that there were sharply differing opinions as to where these new facilities should be constructed -- in large urban areas such as Newark and Jersey City, in smaller cities, or in the suburbs. Other files contain planning materials, agendas and minutes of campaign meetings, brochures and other publicity material, and clippings. The files for Essex County include a list of eleven regional coordinators for the country and the parishes for which they are responsible; four are from Newark. The bulk of the collection consists of files of background material received from firms of architects, engineers, contractors, and suppliers interested in working on Church projects.
