Collection Description
The Diocese of Newark was founded in 1853 and was elevated to an Archdiocese in 1937. In 1978 the Archdiocese celebrated its 125th anniversary with a mass at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (December 1978), an exhibit at the Newark Museum, a multi-cultural event at Seton Hall University (17 November 1978), and other commemorations. Bishops from other dioceses, prominent members of the Catholic community from around the country, politicians and civil officials, and guests attended the celebratory mass. Many who were unable to attend sent letters of congratulation to Archbishop Peter L. Gerety.

Contents of the collection are as follows:

Folder 1: letters of congratulation to Archbishop Gerety; planning documents and invitations for opening service at St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral (October 29, 1978) and for closing service at Sacred Heart Cathedral (December 8, 1978), and material on planning of the exhibit at the Newark Museum; minutes of the 125th Anniversary Committee, Chairman Rev. Edward T. Hajduk (1977)

Folder 2: planning documents, including correspondence, memos, budgets, Committee material, material on planning and opening of the Newark Museum exhibit, and on preparations for publication by Seton Hall of "The Bishops of Newark," a collection of essays produced under the direction of the NJ Catholic Historical Ccommission

Folders 3-4: invitations and replies

Folder 5: clippings (plus photocopies), including many illustrations of the Newark Museum exhibit

Folder 6: Archbishop Gerety's pastoral letter, with related correspondence and notes

Folder 7: copies of the program for the service at Sacred Heart Cathedral

Folder 8: copies of clippings and other items relating to the establishment of the diocese and to the anniversary, with 1988 correspondence
