Collection Description
The Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies Subject Files (known as IFs) is an open collection of topical files on a wide range of subjects related to jazz and related musical genres (folk music, blues, etc.). The content of the files consists largely of printed matter: newspaper clippings, magazine articles, flyers, publicity material, newsletters, bulletins, etc. Files vary greatly in size. Some subjects are represented by only one or two folders, but most main topic headings are very general ("Clubs," "Recording Companies," etc.), with many subheadings, arranged alphabetically. Items date from the 1920s to the present. Much of the early material in the collection comes from the research files of jazz historian Marshall Stearns, whose personal collection formed the core holdings of the Institute at its founding.
