Collection Description
"Newark's Lost Jazz Shrines," is a short (28-minute) biographical documentary of ragtime/stride/early jazz pianist and composer Willie "The Lion" Smith, with special focus on the Newark music scene in the early part of the 20th century. The documentary includes performances from a tribute concert to Smith at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, featuring new arrangements of his works and excerpts from his memoirs read by Amiri Baraka. Marc Fields wrote, directed, and, with Bob Herman, co-produced the documentary, which aired on NJN Public Television, Trenton in 1999.
