Collection Description
The Institute of Jazz Studies Artist Files is an open collection of vertical files with information on approximately 2,500 jazz musicians. The files consist mostly of originals and photocopies of printed material on individual musicians, and may include newspaper and magazine articles, reviews, and advertisements; flyers, postcards, invitations, and other publicity materials; and general biographical information, including obituaries. Most artists' files consist of only one folder, but folders vary greatly in size. Although some material dates from as early as the 1930s, the bulk of the material dates from the 1970s to the present.
